Virola belongs to the Myristicaceae or Nutmeg family. At least a dozen Virola species are smoked or snuffed for their hallucinogenic effects. Virola theiodora is without doubt the most frequently employed species. A reddish resin- like exudate is extracted from the cambial region of the bark of this slender tree.

Effects

The major alkaloid constituent appears to be 5-MeO-DMT with lesser amounts of DMT. Exacts amounts and therefore dosage suggestions are yet unknown.

Effects and side-effects are varied depending on the species used, dosage, and concentration of the drug. Generally, it brings on an initial excitability, followed by numbness and tingling in various parts of the body, loss of somatic coordination, nausea, visual hallucinations, and finally a deep sleep.

Usage

Virola was traditionally boiled down into a thick paste and then dried and eaten or snorted as powder.
